Have you ever taken notice of an actor/actress on television whose spirit just seems to shine through? Someone who is humbled by their own fame and who if you ever met in real life seems like they would be an enjoyable “down to earth” person to get to know? Chandra Wilson, best known for her role as Dr. Miranda Bailey on the hit television series Grey’s Anatomy, seems like just that type of person.
Born in Houston, TX, the acting bug bit Chandra when she was just a child. She officially began her acting career at the age of five in the Theatre Under the Stars, a local Houston based acting company. It’s safe to assume that her early start in acting solidified it as a passion of hers as she went on to attend high school at Houston’s High School for the Performance and Visual Arts. It was here that she continued to hone her craft and feed her passion. Upon graduating, Chandra was accepted into the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts.
From a career perspective, Chandra is truly an “actor’s actor”, having spent much of her career beating the pavement for small roles and hoping for the proverbial big break. Some of her earliest work included appearances on television episodes like The Cosby Show, CBS Afterschool Specials, Law and Order, Cosby, Third Watch, Bob Patterson and even Sex and the City. Chandra has also made several appearances in films including Philadelphia opposite Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. Moreover, Chandra’s talent earned her parts in several critically acclaimed Broadway shows including Avenue Q, Caroline or Change and most recently, Chicago.
Currently Chandra stars as our favorite doctor Miranda Bailey on the hit television series Grey’s Anatomy. What we found interesting about her role is that it was initially envisioned as a blond Caucasian woman. But Chandra’s indisputable talent won the decision makers over and now her role as one of the most talented doctors on staff adds to the diverse cast and certainly sends a positive message to young brown girls everywhere.
Chandra’s portrayal of Dr. Bailey has earned her multiple Emmy nominations, Image awards, SAG awards and BET awards. But perhaps the role she is most proud of, for which she hasn’t received any awards, is that of “mother” to her three children, Serena, 13,Joy, 8, and Michael, 19 months. It’s clear that Chandra enjoys being a mother (and wife)and takes parenting seriously. Her volunteer efforts with Downey Touch of Comfort and as a spokesperson for the safe use of OTC Medicine for children are evidence of her passion for parenting.
From local theater to high school theater, to the “great white way”, the small screen and the big screen, Chandra Wilson has undoubtedly paid her acting dues and we’re excited to see her finally getting a return on her investment.
